Renee Hughes

Renee Hughes is a recognized employment attorney with almost 25 years of experience advising and representing employers, executives and professionals on complex workplace issues.   Drawing on her background representing both employers and employees, Renee advises clients informed by an understanding of how workplace disputes develop, how courts evaluate them, and how legal decisions affect real-world outcomes.  


With a background in mathematics and more than two decades of legal experience, Renee is known for her strategic approach to problem solving, her analytical rigor, and her practical advice.  She places particular emphasis on helping clients evaluate legal risk, identify and address potential issues before they become disputes, and develop practical strategies aligned with their business, professional, and litigation objectives.


​Renee’s practice focuses on employment matters such as non-competition / non-solicitation disputes, wage and hour issues, discrimination and harassment claims, contract disputes, and executive compensation.  She also prepares personnel policies and employee handbooks, drafts employment and severance agreements, and provides strategic counseling on compliance with federal and state employment laws, including Title VII, the ADA, the ADEA, the FMLA, and related statutes.

Additionally, Renee represents employers in responding to charges and investigations before government agencies such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Department of Labor, conducts workplace investigations, and provides management training on employment law and workplace compliance.

 

Renee is admitted to practice before the state and federal courts of North Carolina.

RECOGNITIONS & AFFILIATIONS

Renee has been recognized by numerous legal publications and organizations for her work in employment law and litigation.

 

Since 2013, she has been consistently selected for inclusion in Best Lawyers in America in the areas of Employment Law – Management and Litigation – Labor and Employment.  In addition, Super Lawyers magazine has regularly recognized her in its list of Super Lawyers since 2015, and she has been named among the Top 50 North Carolina women attorneys, Top 25 Lawyers in Charlotte, and Top 100 Lawyers in North Carolina.

 

In 2012, attorneys across North Carolina selected Renee as the state's top employment lawyer in Business North Carolina's Legal Elite awards.  Since then, she has been recognized annually in that publication’s Legal Elite Hall of Fame.

 

Renee is also a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, an honor limited to approximately one percent of lawyers licensed in each jurisdiction.  Fellowship is extended to attorneys whose careers have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and leadership within the legal profession and their communities.

LEADERSHIP AND PROFESSIONAL INVOLVEMENT

Renee has been active in professional and community organizations throughout her career. Her professional leadership roles have included:

 

  • Chair, Labor and Employment Section, Mecklenburg County Bar (2020–2021)

  • Co-Chair, Labor and Employment Section, Mecklenburg County Bar (2019–2020)

  • Chair, Small Firm/Solo Practitioner Section, Mecklenburg County Bar (2009–2012)

 

She is also a member of the Mecklenburg County Bar Association and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, and an alumnus of the Mecklenburg County Bar Leadership Institute.  Outside her legal practice, Renee is a member of CHM Collective, an innovative network of female entrepreneurs, executives and professionals.  She has also served multiple terms on her HOA’s Board and has actively participated in the leadership of various political campaigns.

EDUCATION

Renee earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Wake Forest University and graduated summa cum laude and valedictorian from NCCU School of Law.

 

While in law school, she served on the Law Journal and worked as a teaching assistant in Contracts and Evidence.  Before attending law school, Renee served for six years as the Court Advocate for battered women and children through Domestic Violence Shelter and Services in Wilmington, North Carolina

PERSONAL BACKGROUND

A native North Carolinian, Renee grew up in Wilmington and now lives in the Charlotte area. She enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling, and contributing to her spiritual community.  She is also a certified life coach, a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority, and a passionate supporter of Wake Forest sports. (Go Deacs!)

Renee is dedicated to serving her clients and advancing their interests through strategic planning, zealous advocacy, and client collaboration.
